    AWARD 2023

    Marie-Julie NOKIN (ULiège)

The development of resistance to targeted therapies is one of the greatest challenges in precision oncology, with immediate implications for patient management.
Persistent cells, which act as reservoirs of genetic resistance, are a priority target. Our first project investigates the adaptations and vulnerabilities associated with the inevitable emergence of resistance to BRAF and MEK inhibitors in BRAFV600E lung adenocarcinoma, with a focus on energy metabolism, in order to identify new therapeutic targets.

The Sanofi Award aims to support innovative research in the field of severe obstructive respiratory diseases, where unmet medical needs remain significant. The two prizes are intended to recognise exceptional or promising projects that advance our understanding of and treatment for the following conditions: asthma, COPD or bronchiectasis.
By promoting excellence in research in Belgium, Sanofi aims to achieve scientific advances that will improve the quality of life for people suffering from obstructive lung diseases.

Basic Science Award: €5,000 €2,000 paid to him personally : €3,000 allocated to the continuation of the project :

Unravelling the structural and cellular mechanisms underlying mucus plugs and small airway damage in COPD using spatial imaging and multi-omic approaches.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and is characterised by considerable heterogeneity.
Mucus plugs and damage to the small airways are increasingly recognised as major factors in respiratory obstruction…

AIRBREES – A study into the impact of environmental respiratory exposures on bronchiectasis

The management of bronchiectasis is moving towards a personalised approach based on the identification of ‘treatable traits’. However, the role of environmental factors and lifestyle remains poorly understood. We have therefore launched an exploratory study in two Flemish hospitals. Patients complete an exposure questionnaire based on the European EXIMIOUS and ECRHS projects. These data are combined with…

Establishment of a network and support platform for patients with NTM-PD

NTM-PD (non-tuberculous mycobacterial lung disease) is a complex, chronic lung condition that often affects people with pre-existing lung problems. Patients frequently find it difficult to access appropriate support and may experience uncertainty and isolation. This project aims to create a strong patient network and an online platform offering reliable information, educational activities and opportunities for patients to share experiences, …

    GSK

These awards are designed to promote the sharing and recognition of the results of scientific research in the field of respiratory medicine. They recognise original, relevant and high-quality papers presented by researchers or clinicians on a variety of respiratory topics. Thanks to financial support from GSK, the BeRS organises a dedicated scientific meeting, during which candidates are invited to present their work to a panel of experts. These presentations not only enable the scientific rigour and potential impact of the research to be assessed, but also encourage exchanges between researchers and practitioners in the field. The winners are then ranked according to criteria defined by the jury members.

Following these auditions, four GSK prizes are awarded:

    Basic Science Award: 1st prize : 2 000€ 2nd prize : 1 500€

    Clinical Science Award: 1st prize : 2 000€ 2nd prize : 1 500€

    Elisabeth De Leeuw (UGent)

Early human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV) bronchiolitis and maternal allergy synergistically increase the risk of asthma in offspring via an enhanced type 2 immune response.

Using a neonatal mouse model, infection with a virus similar to hRSV followed by exposure to an allergen induces an asthma-like condition, particularly when the mothers are allergic.
Allergen-specific maternal IgG, transferred via the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), promotes the capture…

    Marco Morbidelli (ULiège)

Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an aggressive form of cancer linked to asbestos, with limited treatment options and a poor prognosis.

ADAM10, a protease that is overexpressed in MPM, promotes tumour progression but is difficult to target due to its role in normal tissues.
To address this, we have developed a dual-targeting protein combining the prodomain of ADAM10 (an inhibitor…

Cystic fibrosis, the most common autosomal recessive disorder among Caucasians, is increasingly recognised as a condition characterised by systemic immune dysregulation.

Using single-cell sequencing, flow cytometry and serum cytokine profiling, we have mapped the immune changes in people with cystic fibrosis, both before and during treatment…

The incremental cardiorespiratory exercise test (EPIC) is widely used to assess exercise capacity and identify the mechanisms limiting it, but there is no consensus on how to define the maximal stage of the test.

In this study, we analysed 449 EPIC scans in patients with COPD, interstitial lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension, as well as in healthy individuals, comparing the visual identification of a VO₂ plateau at different…
